Regulatory learning is about real people

Knowing the dates of The Bribery Act, The Data Protection Act or the Fraud Act rarely, in itself, helps employees reduce risk.

Regulatory training is effective when it portrays real people, in everyday situations to which employees can readily relate, as it broadens and deepens real understanding of what must be done differently to reduce risk.

A blagger, or a genuine customer - can your people tell the difference?

They said they were my bank and that they just needed me to confirm my date of birth and mother's maiden name ...I thought nothing of it!

I'll just put these CDs into the post ...

I usually shred confidential papers but I just don't have the time today ...

I only left my bag on my seat for a moment while I went to the buffet car for a coffee ...

Professionals working in information security, data protection, fraud prevention, operational risk, and compliance roles can draw on a wealth of initial training and continuing professional development

Yet training required for most front-line employees is rarely the same as that which is suited to information security, data protection, fraud prevention and risk and compliance professionals.  Employees who work, for example, in marketing, sales, customer service, information technology, payroll, or contact centres across the whole range of private and public sector organisations, who daily handle vast quantities of personal information are the very employees who, through their actions, can easily, yet mostly accidentally, disclose, or even lose personal information, so putting hundreds of thousands of people at risk.  And these are the very employees for whom regulatory training can seem to be dry, dull and technical; a distraction from their real work rather than a core part of it

Training for front line staff which focuses on legislation and regulation at the expense of what employees must do differently, rarely reduces risk.

How to bring regulatory training to life, capture peoples' attention and imagination and fundamentally change their attitudes and behaviours, so making them more vigilant in protecting personal information, minimising the risk of fraud and preventing bribery is a major challenge for organisations at a time when there is a rising tide of significant data losses and when identity theft and financial crime are on the increase

I just handed over the cash payment to the official as we've all done before.  I didn't realise I was committing a criminal offence and that my employer could also face prosecution.
